Who’s Berry
Berry was born in 1911 in Romania before his family moved to Switzerland in 1914. After a short stay in Brooklyn, New York from 1919 until 1923 the family returned to Switzerland, where they first lived in Basel and eventually settled down in Zurich. In 1936 his brother Hugo founded the Band The Berry’s where the 25-year-old Berry himself played the drums.
The Berry’s became famous quickly for their unique Bebop and Swing style. They played in front of international and illustrious audiences at Grand Hotels like the Palace in Gstaad and Lausanne as well as at the Kulm in Arosa. The band also regularly took the stage at famous venues like the Casino in Montreux and the Esplanade in Zurich. Furthermore they celeberated international success after playing gigs with famous musicians like Coleman Hawkins.
Berry’s favourite musical role models were the drummer Gene Krupa as well as the entertainer and singer Sammy Davis Jr.! After his successful career Berry retired in Zurich where his wonderful way took an end at the age of 89 in the year 2000.
Berry’s way may is past now but the perfect beat of him and his band will eternally go on and therefore always be remembered through our label BERRY ON THE DRUMS.
